Mom Criticized For Bleaching 5-Year-Old Daughter’s Hair For ‘Special And Fun Bonding Moment’

Mother and daughter bonding moments are the best, especially if you treat your little princess to that special place that she wanted to go to. In the case of Demi Lucy May Engemann and her 5-year-old daughter Maude, the two had so much fun at their recent salon trip that little Maude had to skip school to get all the fun. However, it seems like many on the internet seemed to be having a bad hair day and had a rather differing opinion on Demi’s decision to give Maude a makeover that many believe to be a little too advanced for her age.

In a TikTok post last Sept. 29, 2022, by a Utah-based influencer Demi Engemann, she shared a video diary of her and her daughter Maude’s quick trip to the salon when the latter asked if she could bleach her hair so that she could pink in it.

The cute video shows Maude getting her hair brushed, being offered sweet treats as she had her hair being bleached, and letting her mix the bleaching solution with the guidance of the hairstylist.

Midway through the process of having her hair bleached, Maude was visibly excited and even jumpy as she could not wait anymore to see her new hair.

Apparently, Maude has to skip a day in class to come with her mom Demi to the salon appointment. The 5-year-old seemed to have been patient while waiting for the entire bleaching process to finish.

And as soon as she saw the final result of the hours-long bleaching, Maude was giddy and clapping at the sight of her new blonde hair, ready to be dyed pink soon.

Demi and Maude seemed to have had a blast at the bonding moment they shared on their salon trip. The video had over 2 million likes on TikTok and more than 12,000 comments. However, not everyone on the internet is having the best day, as many were not happy with Demi granting her daughter’s request to have her hair bleached.

According to Good Housekeeping, it is not safe for kids under 16 years old to have their hair bleached. This is because children, like Maude, in this case, tend to have finer hair than adults, and since hair dye and bleach can be damaging, a child’s immature hair is much more susceptible to damage.

As seen in the video, Maude’s hairs on the foil are already dyeing because of the strong chemicals present in the solution.

“The chemicals are harsh and can damage hair. Ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and a chemical known as paraphenylenediamine that’s commonly used in permanent hair dye can cause very bad reactions,” Dr. Margarita Lolis, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist, explained.

Internet commentators have pointed out this problem in the comment section of the video.

“This is one thing I can’t bring myself to say yes to. I was allowed to dye my hair as a kid & it damaged it so much it took me till my 20’s to get,” a user shared.

“Very cute but I’m basically balding now because of my hair being bleached at a young age save her beautiful hair. She’s gna miss it when she’s 30,” another person commented.

While some trolls shamed and slammed Demi for letting her daughter bleach her hair, the outpour of love and support for the two overshadowed the negative comments.

“My mom did this to my hair, and I swear I was grown and on a league of my own. Cherish these moments!” one user recalled.

“I think this was a mum and dad going above and beyond to allow their daughter to express herself. And in a healthy way. Like the mumma herself said – “there are really bad parent/child relationships out there…. to those mum-shaming her DO BETTER!” Couldn’t have said it better myself. That little girl doesn’t need anyone’s tick of approval for what she wants to do with her hair except for her parents,” an aPost reader voiced out.

Meanwhile, Demi stood by her choice and elaborated on her decision to grant her daughter’s request to have her hair bleached and dyed.

In a follow-up TikTok video, she explained that she ran by the decision with his husband, who also agreed with the bleaching and clarified that she did not force her daughter to dye her hair.

“So those for you who are jumping into conclusions saying that this is my decision, and that I wanted her to be blonde on the family photos, that’s simply is just not true. I would never put that on my daughter and make her feel like she needs to change anything about herself,” Demi clarified.

In the end, she reminded everyone to do what felt right for them as a mom.
